Chibson Corvette

posted Apr 22, 2014 14:31:41 by JamesZhejiang
Here are some pictures of my Chibson Corvette guitar. I had never seen a guitar like it when I ordered it, although I have now seen some other guitars like it. They didn't have quite the colour I wanted on the seller's website: I did a search for Corvette cars and found a nice blue and white one, so asked the seller to make one that colour. The seller wanted a 400 CNY deposit for doing this paint job, which, being a trusting soul, I did(I wouldn't recommend anyone else do such a foolish thing). The seller later phoned me to say they didn't have rosewood, and could I accept a substitute, but I said no and said I was willing to wait. I am really happy with the way it turned out, although without inlays on the fretboard, I often solo in the wrong key! The only change I made so far is swapping the switch: the Switchcraft switch I bought is thicker depth wise, so I had to drill the wood where the switch goes to make the wood thinner, otherwise the switch wouldn't fit through the hole. I am planning to change other hardware soon. As usual, a long project!

Wow, absolutely love that guitar! I have had one of those on my wish list for over two years but never found anyone who actually owned one. Do you think I could get one in yellow? I had a yellow 1960 Corvette convertible when I was in high school back in 1969. Brings back some great memories! How does it play? Who was the seller?

Hi,

Thanks for the kind comments. I thought that the silence meant everyone hated it! But not to worry, I love it.

I think you could get it in yellow. When I chose the blue, the seller asked for a photo of the car in question, which I sent, and they matched the blue with the photo very closely. But they wanted some money up front.

The seller is a domestic factory I found, which doesn't ship internationally. They are however used by some aliexpress sellers. I was recently shown a youtube video of someone unboxing a "bloody romance" chibson, and the factory said they made it. So whoever the seller was for him could probably also provide this guitar for you.

I don't know how it plays yet. First thing I did was take the rubbishy strings off and give it a clean. Yesterday I put in Seymour Duncan Vintage blues pickups, along with all new wiring. The good thing is that the routes are huge, so I had no trouble getting the wires in. When I have a moment I will solder it up and see how she sounds.

*Edit: I did play it for 2 minutes before taking off the strings, but not amped up. i was mainly looking for dead frets. I tried to play Politician by Cream, and kept going to the 11th fret, rather than the 10th. Then I took the strings off...

A quick search on Aliexpress found my exact guitar. Who knows if they stole the photo from taobao, or if they have a relationship with the factory... (I am in no way recommending this seller)

Here is the search I did

Edit: Cathy also has one in her store, and she is so-called "a-list seller"

Thanks. The only thing I would change, or recommend people change if they want to order their own is to move the switch further away from the neck. I bought a small switch plate (is that the right word?) with treble/rhythm written on it, and I couldn't install it as it was too close to the neck.

Is it just me or are the photos waay too large? Can't see the guitar, only curtains. When I click on the pic, it takes me to imageshak with links to repost, but no photo...

Use Photobucket, they have a option that posts an optimized size for websites. I can't believe Imageshack doesn't.

I have found that on this forum, pages that contain photos often need to be reloaded to get the photos to scale properly.

My mistake Rigid. I am also a member of chinacurtainsceptic.com and posted in the wrong forum.
