Guitars Getting Confiscated

posted Apr 16, 2014 16:03:22 by MichaelWamback
Wanted to post this as a sticky topic for now.

One of our members recently had their Chibson confiscated by Customs in New York. A second member had a Chibson bounce from Chicago to LA Customs, which is also a bit unusual.

While these may be isolated incidents, they may also be the beginning of a more vigorous crackdown on the importation of counterfeit goods by US Customs.

We will update this topic as new information becomes available. But you may wish to consider this risk when placing an order for a replica guitar if you live in the United States and discuss the possibility of the guitar getting confiscated with the seller when you purchase. In particular, you may wish to have them specify what their policy is if your guitar does end up getting confiscated. In most cases, sellers have offered a full refund, or to make and ship a new guitar.

There should be no risk of confiscation if you have ordered a guitar with an altered headstock shape and your own logo. This will apply only to guitars that break trademark laws.

The two most important things to remember in life: "The only time it's acceptable to work with amateurs is if you are making porn." "If you want to work with clowns, join a circus."

My Slash AFD had been held ( or destroyed ) at ISC New York since March 8. That's roughly two and a half freaking months. All tracking has listed since it came across the pond is " Processed through ISC New York , March 8, 8:51AM. If they did confiscate, which I'm sure they did, they should at least give me some sort of notification. Hell, I'd be happy with a nasty letter. But yes, it does appear that Chicago is not the only ISC that is seizing Chinese guitars. Anyone still thinking of gambling your hard earned buck, heed my warnings.

That has to suck major monkey balls. They should at least give some notice as to why they kept your guitar. I thought you still had the right to appeal a confiscation in the U.S?

If you don't mind me asking, who did you buy it from? And are you going to get a replacement?

I ordered from Ali and I have had an open dispute for over a month. I finally decided to get my card company involved. I told the seller and Aliexpress both to just send a new guitar (altered of course) or the money.whichever. This is a long nut wrenching process. I placed this order on Jan.24. YEAHN NO SHIT! My first experience has not been good" to say the very least.

You should get a piece of mail from Customs and Boarder Patrol about the item being seized.

If there is no "handed over to Customs" line in the tracking, then I would doubt that it was confiscated. Pilfered, maybe, or lost somehow.

Did you look at the tracking on both the EMS website and usps.com?

drew,

About 75% of the guitars I've received through New York never scanned in customs at all. It seems whoever is scanning them is hit or miss with each package on checking it in as being through customs.
