pickup fix-up

posted Apr 14, 2014 19:07:27 by ParéjJózsef
how hard it is to upgrade out factory pickups to reach the "cool-factor"? I was thinking about a magnet change and wax potting- I know wax potting is nothing special, any other suggestions?

Honestly, I believe you'll get more bang for you buck actually buying a new pickup for the guitar unless you really want to get into swapping magnets and learning how to rewind pickups.

magnet swap should be really cheap- I looked around in some shops, and found potentially good magnets for about 2-3 bucks a piece, that's a good option- I want to figure out the problem with the original pups. if it's the magnet and the wax potting, its a cheap alternative. rewinding is a different case, for long summer nights with beers and boredom :D

As long as the wind works for you give it a shot. They probably use ceramic, MAYBE alnico 5.

But if the pickups are wound to 16k and you want a clear sound that won't cut it. Some of the pickups are much better quality than others, some should be thrown right in the trash though.
