What distance are your bridge post centers?

posted Apr 11, 2014 13:58:16 by stanton.kramer
When we go to buy replacement bridges the post centers are listed as 74mm. However, my Chibson and Epi Les Paul bridge post centers are 73.65mm. Davesintexas also confirms all of his Chibsons are 73.65mm Doesn't seem like a lot of difference, but it was enough to require me to slightly modify my Wilkinson roller bridge by enlarging the holes slightly.

The various videos I see where replacement bridges are a "drop in" leave me scratching my head. Are the specs on those bridges so loose they allow the slight variation, or is everyone else getting a guitar with true 74mm spacing???

I just fitted a tonepros TOM bridge on mine, i think its a nashville type just a couple of mm wider bridge than the ABR1, 5mm posts instead of 4mm, as the inserts in the guitar were 6mm i just carefully ground the tops of the chibson posts down with a grinder and it fits fine.

Just a quick question. When you replaced the bridges, did you also remove and replace the post bushes.A number of people have said the same but without supplying all the relevant information.

No used same bushes and posts, the threads on the posts and bushes are not a tight fit and allow enough movement to fit the slightly wider bridge in my case anyway,it adjusts and locks down well.

@ Rhys... Thanks for the reply. But I am looking for the measurement of the distance between the posts, center to center.

@ Vambo... The bushings in the guitar stayed. All I did was unscrew the existing posts and screw in the new posts. I wanted to avoid pulling the bushings out. But the reason for my OP; to find out how some like CGS is able to just drop a bridge on with no mods. Most all replacements are sold as 74mm and the ctr/ctr measurement on my Chibson and Epi is 73.65mm. So I had to enlarge the holes on the bridge, which I did poco a poco with my dremel tool. You can see that the insides of the bridge mounting holes have been carved out a touch.

I changed all three of my Chibson bridges to GOTOH NASHVILLE(Metric) which is my preference.I also changed the bushes and posts, and found no problem with the spacing. The post and bushes are designed to fit together,so it is best practice to change all the parts. The Gotoh metric bridge is 74mm spacing.
In the CGS video,if you watch again, you will see he changes a GOTOH NASHVILLE bridge to the ABR-1 from PHILIALUTHIERTOOLS, it is not a Chinese made bridge that he changes,so that might clear up as to why it is just a drop on replacement on his Guitar. If you wonder how I know this, it is because the Gotoh bridge, studs and bushes belong to me.
Here are some photos of the bridges, sorry I have only two out of the three.
Hope that helps
