I really need to put my hands on a new guitar!

posted Mar 17, 2014 13:39:57 by GsxJones
Im based in the North East of the UK,and yesterday visited a guitar show, where somebody had for sale a very unusual single pickup 58 style flametop LP. It had obviously been set up well and played beautifully, but unfortunately,I didnt have enough cash with me. The seller (dealer selling on behalf of a customer for the show)explained it wasnt an american guitar, but a chinese copy. lol. I was amazed. I own a couple of genuine USA Lp's (std and 3 pickup custom)and would have happily placed the chinese guitar along side them for playability/sound. Plus the chinese one looked better than my guitars! It took me a while to search the net to find any sellers, but now Im here! Having seen some of the guitars people have bought,Im now torn between a gold top LP,a EVH type guitar or a nice flame top LP. Ive enjoyed reading other peoples post's,but Im still nervous to jump in with my plastic bank card. Once I take the plunge,I'll report back with what Im ordering and we can see how it goes? Any advice greatfully received!! Thank you,Brett.

Brett, just as a matter of interest, how much was the seller asking for the LP at the guitar show you mentioned in your opening post?

Franc, the guitar at the guitar show was up for £250 with no case. If Im honest,I thought I should have bought it,and that would have been that. BUT,I then possibly wouldnt have searched the internet and fount this site and all the sellers in China. lol.
With the exchange rate as it is today, mine has worked out at £259,but that includes a hard case.
I think its a bit of a swings and roundabouts situation. If I had bought the guitar at the show,I would have it here now,but Im looking forward to the enjoyment and excitement of the wait.
Waiting gives me time to collect bits for it to do upgrades.
Ive had an idea today which Im fairly eager to try. I paint a lot of motorbikes,so Im used to paint and experimentation.
These are a couple of pics of my work. A before and after. I think a guitar refinish will be a LOT easier!! lol

My idea this morning might be more for mods and upgrades, which I'll cover once the guitar is here, will be to mix a little 2K paint hardener into some nitrocellulose clear coat. The hardener doesnt have plasticizers (is that the right word?),so will harden the cleearcoat. My thinking is that a harder surface coat will crack and check easier?

Failing that I have a sharp knife. lol.

Fuel tank job looks good buddy, a guitar body will be a breeze for you I reckon.

I've been checking out the 'dulling then nitro over poly' threads elsewhere on the net and quite a few people say the nitro will shrink over time anyway, will the hardener delay that?

I think the main thing is to get the dulling process even and correct, this will give a good key for the nitro to bed into.

If it cracks and checks easier, might it not start falling off easier too?
God give me patience ... but I want it NOW!!

Correct Steve !

I've used paypal with Cathy on all six of my purchases through her.

Going back to Parej's comment, when I placed my request to order I did mention I had seen she was an A-lister on here,I thought a mention of the forum might make her take a bit more care,as as you say,her (great)reputation could be raised or lowered depending on how things go? Ive confidence with Cathy,so far communication has been very good.

Cathy mailed me to ask if I wanted the neck join/rear of the body scalloped, the same as the link below.

I dont like that and requested a normal neck join for a LP.
Ive just logged in to Aliexpress to find a message saying the build will start today.

I believe Gibson calls that an "axecess" heel or something. The Matt Heafy signature Les paul Custom has that going on for it.

I think you'll be pleased with what Cathy sends your way. Hope the build turns out great! I can't wait for my green/black PRS 22 to get done within the next week or so.

Thank you ChibsonsandMore for comment,I hope you can stick some pics up of your"PRS" when it arrives. One of those is on my wish list for the future!

ChibsonsandMore,I mention youve bought 6 guitars from Cathy?? PICS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol.
ChibsonsandMore said Mar 23, 2014 21:14:18
Cathy should have photos sometime this week of the in-progress build. It's still got about 10-12 days before it should be "done".

I ordered it with several custom options, including my own logo, locking tuners, a Tune-o-matic bridge and for it to be string through instead of stop tail. This one will be a emerald green quilted maple top with a small black burst around the edges.

If it turns out great, I'm going to order another in a different shade.
