I really need to put my hands on a new guitar!

posted Mar 17, 2014 13:39:57 by GsxJones
Im based in the North East of the UK,and yesterday visited a guitar show, where somebody had for sale a very unusual single pickup 58 style flametop LP. It had obviously been set up well and played beautifully, but unfortunately,I didnt have enough cash with me. The seller (dealer selling on behalf of a customer for the show)explained it wasnt an american guitar, but a chinese copy. lol. I was amazed. I own a couple of genuine USA Lp's (std and 3 pickup custom)and would have happily placed the chinese guitar along side them for playability/sound. Plus the chinese one looked better than my guitars! It took me a while to search the net to find any sellers, but now Im here! Having seen some of the guitars people have bought,Im now torn between a gold top LP,a EVH type guitar or a nice flame top LP. Ive enjoyed reading other peoples post's,but Im still nervous to jump in with my plastic bank card. Once I take the plunge,I'll report back with what Im ordering and we can see how it goes? Any advice greatfully received!! Thank you,Brett.

Not sure why - but posts seem to "unsticky" themselves periodically. I've edited it to sticky again - so it should sit at the top for a while.

for the neck, scarf joint is stronger, I wouldn't get a heel joint or a body that is more than 2-3 pieces... it might be my mental problem, but I still don't prefer glue to wood.

What's the problem with a heel joint? A heel joint isn't any weaker than a one piece neck... Basically the only difference is cosmetic, and personally, I prefer visually a heel joint to a scarf joint. This guitar has one for instance: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Wholesale-Free-Shipping-Musical-instruments-Newest-orange-3-pickups-P-R-S-Electric-Guitar-Birds-Inlay/813016_1242011252.html and depending on the finish it might not even be visible. I know a scarf joint is said to be stronger, but I don't know, just seems weird to have a joint in what appears to be the 'middle' of the neck.

All in all, doesn't really matter, even Fenders aren't one piece bodies, and they cost much more than Chenders: http://www.strat-talk.com/forum/stratocaster-discussion-forum/6275-strat-body-made-one-piece-wood.html

I just don't like the look of too much pieces glued together... a 2 piece body if matched well, can look good, even a 3 piece, but for me, a 3 piece body should be made of 2 types of wood, with a matched laminated neck... I'd love to get my hands on a V, LP or SG with a 3 piece laminated neck and a 3 piece body with a mahagony/maple/mahagony arrangement.. like a sandwich of coolness :D

Doh! I was thinking about ordering, but have decided to wait a few days to see what the AliExpress sale comes up with on the 25th?
I dont know if a sale would cover a custom order, but I'll hang fire and ask? I like the single humbucker'd flame top LP std,and fancy requesting one with a floyd rose. Id add a decent Seymour Duncan pickup in with decent wiring and pots, once it arrives. Then relic it.
I custom paint motorcycles,so refinishing a guitar doesnt worry me too much. My idea would be to carefully flatten off the poly finish, then respray the whole thing with new nitrocellulose clearcoat. With the clearcoat aged,a few wear marks here and there,Im going to (hopefully)have a cool one off guitar. Roll on the 25th!!!

FjgsxJones.. I'm with you on trying some respraying etc.. some of these guitars are just begging for a nitro finish !

Did this partscaster Strat last year, (rattle-can GM auto paint plus nitro !!), but learned so much about getting a good finish.

Wow Franc! Thats a really great looking guitar,Id be proud to own that!
The temptation is getting to me,Ive mailed Cathy at Empress OEM guitar store
to ask if this guitar could be ordered with a Floyd rose trem?

Ive also mailed this company to request to see if any more pics were available of this guitar?
With the lack of binding on the flamed top,it looks like (I think??)a Gary Moore model??

Thanks to Franc Im now off to check out more Strats!

Ive had a reply back from Cathy, who has advised that yes they can do the single pickup LP with a Floyd Rose for an extra $50.00. I think that sounds pretty good??

Update as I type,Cathy has just this minute messaged to say a one piece neck will be an extra $30,and a one piece body a further $20. So that an extra $100 on top of the original price.
Thoughts please????? I know its still a cheap guitar, but do the extra's add up in other peoples opinions??

LOL,Ive just had a quick approx look at the cost in GB pounds. About £206. For a one off custom guitar. How can I complain about that? lol.

Ive sent Cathy a message asking for her to go ahead with the single pickup LP Std,Floyd Rose, one piece neck, one piece body and a brown hard guitar case. Have I missed anything off the request??? She has advised she'd produce pics,Id have the say at the end once done, before its shipped my way. It sounds easy so far. lol. What can possibly go wrong? LOL. All in it should be about £245 with a case. And delivery from China to the UK!!
Next up,some decent pots and a decent pickup. Im not fussed about the machine heads,as I figure if the strings are locked with the Floyd Rose locking nut,the thing shouldnt go to far out of tune. I'll also buy a new genuine truss rod cover.
Im excited now. I had joked about buying a new (s/h)LP for my upcoming birthday, and at this rate I can afford to order more than one. We'll get this one bought and delivered, and then take it from there. I can see Im going to be buying guitars on a fairly regular basis now. I can see my two genuine USA Gibson's taking a back seat and being used as dust collectors from now on. lol.

Her prices for a one piece body and neck are about on par with all the other sellers. Same with the Floyd, although some of those units are apparently a bid dodgy in terms of quality. But you can always upgrade to a better trem after. Ask Gibson what they would charge to do you a one of custom guitar :)

That's a result indeed and like MichaelWamback says, imagine what number Gibson would come up with for that spec.

'Cathy' seems to be on it, I asked for actual pics of a guitar that was pictured and obviously was a 'Gibson' .. 6 pics sent to me, no hassle.

LOL,Gibson would charge about £3000-4000 plus for a one off.
A few years back,I bought myself a japanese Fernandes Super Grade (Burny les paul),that (ahem..cough..)I fitted a Gibson MOP headstock inlay with a gold Les Paul model decal, uprated the bridge pickup and played it as much as I could. I loved it more than the USA LP Std I had at the time. Again, the guitar was a fraction of the cost of the original. Im sure with a fret dress,a truss rod adjustment, some internal screning,a set of new pots and a good pickup ,plus if needed a better Floyd rose unit,I'll have a great guitar!!! I cant wait!!!
Im going to contact Cathy again today to make payment.
Question time???
I feel I can trust cathy,as she seems to have a good reputation, she's suggested I can pay with PayPal,is this the best payment method??

(I left the Fernandes neck pickup alone,as it sounded like the one in Gary Moore's LP)(It was stolen from me...).

with paypal it's faster, but harder to dispute over things, I think. through ali, there is a 24hour wait till they process your payment, but if you contact her today, it doesn't matter, She'll start on monday. And don't forget to tell her you've heard good things about her here, she loves us! :D also, she will double check everything with you then, she wants to protect her rep :)
