I really need to put my hands on a new guitar!

posted Mar 17, 2014 13:39:57 by GsxJones
Im based in the North East of the UK,and yesterday visited a guitar show, where somebody had for sale a very unusual single pickup 58 style flametop LP. It had obviously been set up well and played beautifully, but unfortunately,I didnt have enough cash with me. The seller (dealer selling on behalf of a customer for the show)explained it wasnt an american guitar, but a chinese copy. lol. I was amazed. I own a couple of genuine USA Lp's (std and 3 pickup custom)and would have happily placed the chinese guitar along side them for playability/sound. Plus the chinese one looked better than my guitars! It took me a while to search the net to find any sellers, but now Im here! Having seen some of the guitars people have bought,Im now torn between a gold top LP,a EVH type guitar or a nice flame top LP. Ive enjoyed reading other peoples post's,but Im still nervous to jump in with my plastic bank card. Once I take the plunge,I'll report back with what Im ordering and we can see how it goes? Any advice greatfully received!! Thank you,Brett.

well, I think for the first run, try someone from the A-list of sellers, and ask for photos of the guitar. when ordering, try keeping the specs plain, in points like
-one piece mahagony body
-one piece mahagony neck
-maple top
etc..., and send them pictures if you want anything custom... and be prepared to have a fretjob, new hardware, pups, etc, but in the end, it's all worth it, I hope(I'm waiting on my custom order, so can't say anything for certain :))

Thank you for the link. That looks exactly like the one from the guitar show yesterday. £140 (approx) with free shipping!! A quilty pickup, some new pots and probably a new nut,a great cheap and unusual guitar. The only problem is,now that Ive seen the selection of guitar available,I dont know which one to pick (first!)?? I suppose i should try to check feedback's for that store and go from there. Thank you.

Ive taken a browse over some other sellers (now I want one of these too) and Empress OEM and Guitar Monopoly have what the same model (slightly different bursts) I'm thinking it would have to have a Zebra pickup on it to look truly cool - that should be a cost free option - I also wondered about a Floyd Rose :) now that would be properly cool.......

LOL,Id been looking at some of the flame top EVH guitars too, maybe as you suggest,a zebra pick up'd floyd rose'd single pickup LP standard?? Mmmmm...that would be cool and definately custom! I wonder if it could be done???? Ive looked at so many pics of LP's,my heads now spinning!

I checked out the vid from your link last night as I searched single pickup guitars. The gold top is a stunning great sounding beast of a guitar!

The better sellers can do pretty much anything you want - a pickup change should be a cheap option - or buy it as is and retrofit your preferred model :)

You're not going mad, I can't find it either; it seems to have disappeared!

Hey, Moderators - can you find it and bring it back?

PS - Hey guess what? I got the 4,000th post!

The sellers list was un-stickied, I replied to it so it's back on page 1, but as it's not sticky'd, might fall to page 2, then 3, etc.

-one piece mahagony body
-one piece mahagony neck

Is this really worth it btw? One piece neck, it's been said that a two piece neck is actually stronger than a one piece... So it ends up being more a cosmetic upgrade than a performance upgrade. Plus you can put the 2 piece on the body side, making it a bit less obvious and imho a bit better looking. The same thing goes for the one vs multiple piece body; cosmetic.

So given that the cost is usually 30$ for body and 20$ for the neck, well, on a 250$ guitar you're adding 20% to the cost. Add the ebony fretboard, your 250$ guitar becomes 320$, which is a third more...

Also, don't rely on store pictures... Sadly, many use generic pictures of genuine guitars, so in many cases, what you see is not what you get.

for the neck, scarf joint is stronger, I wouldn't get a heel joint or a body that is more than 2-3 pieces... it might be my mental problem, but I still don't prefer glue to wood.

Actually the glue is not an alternative to wood, it's an addition to it, in that the glue soaks into the wood on either side of the join. Thus the join is stronger than the wood itself.

Jones,
Rob here! Let me chime in my two cents. I personally would stick with the Chibson type guitars. I purchased a EVH from REG and ran into a few snags during construction and found that with all the corrections I had to make to the guitar, I was close to the price of a real EVH. With the Chibsons, you may change pups, adjust a truss rod, change the guts, a nut and you are good to go and for not alot of cash if you can do some of that yourself. I hope this helps!

I agree with Rob, and since I believe 90% of the guitars they build are chibsons, I think they can do it better. On the other hand, you can order anything, and if you want, go crazy with an EVH, if you have the money. If I would order an EVH, I'd order it with a kahler or TOM bridge, I'd relic the s**t out of the finish, drop in some metal-covered EMG's or SD's, and either install a real kahler on it, or the top-mount floyd, just for the sake of the old frankenstrat :)... some things I'd never do to a real EVH :D
