Active-passive wiring madness

posted Feb 05, 2014 23:52:49 by ParéjJózsef
So, for my latest build I have:
1-an LTD F-250 in absolutely crappy condition
2-a pair of EMG pickups, a passive HZ for the neck, and an active 81 for the bridge with the jack for the active
3-a 3 way toggle switch, a burnt volume pot, and a working 500k tone pot

so, since I really don't want to spend on getting a good replacement for either pickup, I came up with the brilliant idea of wiring up the pups on 2 circuits, switched by the 3 way switch. I'm getting a 25k pot tomorrow for the active, and i'm already using the passive. my only problem is that this way I can't install a tone pot, and the pickups sound too harsh... when I got the guitar, they sounded better, but the wiring was a mess -saying useless is an understatement, it was electrical hazard- so now I cleaned it up, but I need something for each circuit that gives the character of a tone pot at 10(since I never studied phisics in english (or real phisics in any language) I'm not gonna throw words I'm unsure of). I know position 10 should be bypass, but it still changes the tone a bit, and that's what I'm after.

I'm assuming you have 2 pots in your configuration, if I'm reading it right?

I know a couple of manufacturers make 250k/500k concentric pots (meaning 2 pots stacked with 1 shaft.) Sounds like that's essentially what you would need, but I don't know of anyone who makes a 25k one. I don't know enough about them to know if it would be possible to convert a 250k/500k to a 25k/500k - or if there is someplace that would be able to special order you one. Most manufacturers like CTS are happy to make whatever you want, but have a minimum order of 1,000 units or more to make it worth their while.

You might want to research the internet a bit - you might find a small manufacturer that could build or modify such a pot for you. If you could find such a beast, a pair of them would essentially give you a 4 pot setup but with just 2 knobs.

I don't need a functional pot, just it's characteristics when it's maxed. I've read on a couple of pages that installing 250k instead of 500k will darken your sound- since 1 500k is now missing from my circuit, that seems reasonable... for the 25k, idk... I've seen 20, I'll might try one.

Without tone control, I wonder if you could get away with just running the guitar through an EQ pedal to knock off some of the brightness.

I ended up installing 250k and 20k pots, it's just fine... but the pots are too small, I cant fix them to the body... maybe glue? :D

Do you mean you don't have nuts small enough to tighten them down? Maybe try putting a spacer/washer that's larger between?

I'll do that :) but the electronics are sweeet. I just noticed I didn't get the 250k but a 200in its place, but everything sounds right :D

I wonder if swapping the position of the pickups will give you a tone you prefer without having to do any fancy wiring, or spend any money.

not position :D in the shop when I asked for a 250, they gave me a 200.... but, the 20 should have been a 25 as well, but it sounds killer :D
