THE PARTS STORE

posted Jan 16, 2014 21:12:53 by vambostrausser
Why don't we collectively set up a PARTS STORE where people can see all the links in one place.
This is to inform people of WHAT and WHERE and not for commenting on what in peoples opinions are GOOD and BAD.

FROM A UK POINT OF VIEW
-------------------------
I KNOW U.S.A PRICES CAN BE A LOT CHEAPER,BUT UNLESS YOU BUY MOST ITEMS FROM ONE PLACE THE SHIPPING AND CUSTOMS CHARGES WILL EAT INTO THE LOWER PRICE,SO IT IS SOMETIMES NOT COST EFFECTIVE.

HERE IS A SHORT LIST FOR ANY MEMBER VENTURING INTO UPGRADING THEIR CHINESE GUITAR

THESE ARE VARIOUS COMPANIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD I USE ON A REGULAR BASIS,ALL WHICH HAVE PROVED TO BE RELIABLE AND COST EFFECTIVE.

THIS IS NOT THE HOLY GRAIL OR A CASE OF I KNOW BETTER,JUST TRYING TO POINT SOME OF THE NEWER MEMBERS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND SAVE THEM MONEY IN THE PROCESS.

A CHINESE GUITAR AT A CHINESE PRICE CAN EASILY BE DOUBLED WHEN MODIFYING OR UPGRADING AND BY SHOPPING AROUND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO CLAW SOME, IF NOT ALL OF THE V.A.T BACK WHICH WILL ALWAYS BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE.

HAPPY SHOPPING

I buy the vast majority of my parts from Ebay - since I do find it to be the least expensive option for most things. Some specialty tools from StewMac - but they are pricy so I only buy from there if no other option is available. Sweetwater can be a good option for parts, accessories and strings as well - great customer service.

I get lots of my stuff from the USA via Ebay, no Australian customs charges if the combined (price and postage) value is less than $1000AU.

StewMac has some great tools, but they aren't going to do you any favors on price. It's always worth checking around first, especially with more common tools like peghole reamers. You can often find them at a fraction of what StewMac charges. But their stuff is good quality and they do have an excellent selection, including some tools that seem to be exclusive to them.

I get a lot of stuff off Ebay, but as always you have to do some homework to know whether you are getting a deal or not. Where they are good (speaking in terms of the US) is that you can order stuff from out of state and not have to pay sales tax, which can add up on a larger order - especially with many sellers offering free shipping. But yes, some people gouge. Saw an add (which might be still there, since it was running for over a year) for a "genuine wiring" for a vintage EDS-1275. The guy was asking $1,000 for a bit of roached vintage braid, a couple of old Gibson pots and a old roached jack. I can build the exact same harness for about $30 total - since all the parts on it are readily available. And in this case, a small piece of late 60's vintage braid as opposed to a new piece of the exact same vintage braid would add zero value to your guitar.

Not to mention that they were likely ripped out because they were crap to begin with.

So as always - let the buyer beware.
