FAKE ON EBAY UK

posted Nov 13, 2013 11:32:35 by vambostrausser
Just found this on Ebay UK

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chinese-Les-Paul-Replica-Guitar-/171171737854?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item27daa170fe

Whilst the seller is not advertising it as an original, this now leaves the doorway open for a potential buyer to pass this on as a genuine product.
Although it is legal to import solely for your own use,it now seems it is also legal to resale counterfeit products on Ebay.

I don't think it's legal to sell these on Ebay, and I'm willing to bet if it were brought to Ebay's attention they would take the listing down and contact the seller. I notice he specifically doesn't show photos of the headstock. Wonder why? :)

A lot of people think that it's legal to resell these things as long as they honestly let people know it's a replica. I'm afraid the Constabulary might have other ideas.

It is illegal to resell known counterfeit goods, but Ebay will take their percentage like they do on every grey goods that are sold on there,so one more will only add to their coffers.

Still not sure it's not just a case of Ebay not proactively policing their listing, as opposed to intentionally allowing it. These guys are careful not to post the word "Gibson" that might be flagged. I'm guessing that with millions upon millions of listings, Ebay just doesn't have the time for a human to approve each and every listing. Only way to know for sure would be to report them and see if Ebay acts to remove the listing.

Not sure what to make of this "Les Paul project" "Gibson Standard" shipping from China on Ebay in the US. They never show a photo of the front headstock. The back headstock photo sure looks a lot like the Gibson trademark shape.

Ebay Fake

They have another listing with the same guitar at a "Buy It Now" price. They show the front of the headstock but are they using the black shoe polish trick to hide the Gibson and Les Paul logos? Something is off with that photo.

There seem to be alotta "Gibson" husks coming up on eBay lately, usually relic'd and/or scuffed up - if you look close enough you'll see they're decent quality knock-offs. Its more difficult to tell w/ all the hardware removed.

But they're being sold by US ppl and are selling for $600 - $900 USD, which is a nice mark-up if they only paid $300.

Saw this one on eBay, even reported it but the sale still went through. I asked the seller if it was a Tradetang or Aliexpress guitar and they said it was but couldn't remember which. They got almost $1300 for a $250 guitar.

re: ^ ~ YEOUCH!

this is one of the eBay sellers who's stripping the hardware off Chinese fakes & selling the bodies as legit:

That looks fairly real to me. Look at the neck binding.

Way to tell for sure is to look at thd trussrod.

I was thinking about this, and I'm willing to bet that if you paid a few extra bucks you could get the Chinese to build you a Gibson replica with a Gibson truss rod. I know that Stew Mac sells Gibson style truss rods, and they aren't that expensive. Around $10 plus shipping.

And the guitars he lists on Ebay don't have the headstock binding, so you won't be able to tell from that. The neck side binding is usually done fairly well on a lot of the Chibsons, as is the body binding. Where you can always tell is where the headstock binding and the neck binding meet on some of the Gibson models.

These actually may be real Gibson bodies and necks. I'm thinking that they may get Gibsons that have been somewhat trashed, sell off the hardware and then refurbish and sell the bodies and necks. I'm just not sure they are fakes form the photos.
