Rare Electric Guitars "Wolfganger" Build

posted Oct 18, 2013 14:30:06 by Rob
My plan was to buy one of the replicas of the evh and strip it and add the proper tuners, Floyd Rose, Dtuna, pups, etc. I couldn't find one seller who'd make one without that huge route around the Floyd Rose! I contacted REG back in August and gave them all the info and specs and pics I could find and via email correspondence I was assured this could be built to my specs.

I was emailed pictures of the guitar near the end of September and here is what I was shown. The routing was there as was some bubbling in the paint job. Since I don't have to pay for it upon my approval I told them I either get a discount to cover they repair by my luthier, fix it, or keep it. They sent me a picture of the US Wolfgang and tried to say the routing was the same!

Again, discount, fix it or keep it! They agreed to fix it! We'll see how they do!

I just got the Jimmy Page double neck from them, and the guitar is outstanding. The biggest faults I could find was a bit of ripple in the pickguards so they don't lay completely flat (I'm planning on having custom 4 ply guitars for it anyway) and a few of the tuning machines are a bit crooked. Other than that, fit and finish are exceptional.

There were issues with the shipping back in July/August. They had built me a guitar but were not able to ship it. From research, it appears as though the issue was with EMS, who said they wouldn't insure copy guitars against confiscation. Companies switched to another company, that was a disaster.

REG offered (I didn't ask) to give me a full refund. So at least they are honest.

I reordered again in September after they straightened out their shipping. Got the guitar on my doorstep in just under 4 weeks with no problem.

I'm considering them for more work in the future - so please keep us updated on how this guitar turns out.

So far, I have to admit, they are working to make me happy on this build! I have several pics and they look great except for that routing. As soon as I can figure out posting pics I will!

Nice one! Hows it play for you?

Honestly, it's one of my favorite guitars to play. The action is really nice on it and the necks feel really good. Still learning to place my fingers properly on the 12-string neck. You can get a bit sloppy on the 6-string neck, but with 12 strings there's no margin for error. It's obviously going to be nose-heavy, but due to the width of your body it kinda nestles into your armpit when you are sitting so you never notice the neck weight.

I did rewire the guitar with Bourns pots (500k linear for volume/500k audio for tone) and used some Russian military PIO caps. Also installed Switchcraft switches to wire it up properly. Had to sand away some of the body with my Dremel and a sanding drum attachment to install the larger switches, but well worth it. Needed a bit of fretwork as well.

The only real flaws I can find with the guitar (other than the wiring just was wrong) is a couple of tuning machines are slightly crooked and there's a slight ripple in the lower pickguard. I think the pickguard is squeezed a bit too tight between the two pickup rings, which has caused it to arch up a bit. I'm planning on filing away a small bit so it fits better, and then warming the plastic with a hair dryer to press it flat. Ultimately, I want to send the pickguards out to have proper 4 ply guards made for it.

Really a great guitar though, and the workmanship on the build quality overall is top notch.

Here is a link to my YouTube review of the guitar. Unfortunately, I'm not the pro videographer that China Guitar Skeptic is :)

Nice write up! I may have to get one but I'm waiting to see how the Wolfganger comes out! I'm not great at videos either and I'm too busy with other things!

Here is the Wolfganger build with incorrect bridge route and an example of what I was after!

I'm curious to see how it comes out. Also curious to know what quality the Floyd Rose is. I know that a lot of those bridges that come with these Guitars is total crap. Just wondering if REG uses a better quality Floyd. Please let us know when you get yours.

Glad to hear they seem to be cooperating. I suspect it's important to send them photos with stuff like this, and also good to check photos of the build before you have them ship. Much better to catch mistakes that way.

My guitar from them took just under 4 weeks form order to arrival. Let me know if your's takes about the same.

Cheers

I started the process August 5th and sent them specs, pics, etc and now it's Oct 21st. No stone was left un-turned on this one! My emails were very simple to understand yet very specific! I assume it will need some tweaking which is fine. The Floyd Rose is a Floyd Rose II which is pot metal garbage so that will be replaced with a real FR.

I'm glad I asked for pics because as you can see, the routing is not what I wanted and you can see the paint defects in the routing cavity. It looks good enough but I did notice some choppy work around the neck pocket. REG has been pretty good about fixing this and since I haven't paid for it yet, they are really working for my business.

As I stated before, they tried to get me to take by saying the real one has a routing as well I agreed but it theirs was much larger than what I wanted, so I declined. When I told them I work in manufacturing and I'd put calipers on a real one and send the measurements, they said they'd fix it! As soon as I get it(?) I'll post it here and if it works out I plan on having a stealth done in a matte red or blue finish.

I recently got an update....and there is no movement on this. They are still trying to "fix" the guitar. I imagine they are going to try to place a block in the route as best they can, then repaint. But I would prefer a properly cut body.

To date, no word from REG at all after a few emails. I am putting this one to bed and going to make a different purchase.

Yeah, It's a shame. I think I will pick up one of his new "striped series" guitars. GM does have a nice brown '59 LP rep I'd like to grab but they aren't responding to emails.

Those photos look really good. I'm assuming you are still buying the guitar?
